Here's an odd question.

If I buy a new car in Washington state and immediately (next day) start a drive to Anchorage where I will keep it and license it, is it possible to avoid WA licensing and sales tax?

If you live in Alaska you can go to DMV and register it in Alaska and bring the plates down with you and then drive it up. That's what I did when I bought my truck in Everett and drove it up the day I got there.

I bought a truck in Washington and they gave me a 3 day trip permit to bring it back to Alaska. Didn't have to pay any of the Washington taxes.

I bought a couple of vans in Washington a while back. They gave us a temporary registration. I think it was good for a couple of weeks. Maybe it wasn't that long... But it allowed us to get across the border and make the drive.

I traded my F150 with Alaska Plates on it for an Escape and had them put the Alaska plates on it and send the forms to Alaska which worked OK. Had to get the registration sent from Alaska when it came back.
