Can anybody give me some info on how the property tax is calculated in AK?

Is it based on market value? # of schools?

If you can provide some examples with your own homes such as the value of your home compared to the property taxes that you pay it would be really helpfull in gaging the cost of living.

State wise, none. If you are talking about Borough (County) or city levels, you need to pick a place because they are all different.

Otherwise it is like that joke about the IRS... How much did you make last year? Send that amount in....

Property taxes vary from borough to borough, city to city, town to town. If the property is not in a borough, city, or town, then there is no property taxes. Otherwise property taxes are expressed as a "Mill Levy". In the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, for example, the Mill Levy is 15.019 for 2008. Which means that for every $100,000 of assessed value, the property is taxed $1,501.90.

The Unorganized Borough outside of any incorporated municipalities. Find a map of it. It's a big area. You'll be well away from the cities and their "services" keep in mind...

It's basically a county: List of boroughs and census areas in Alaska - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"In Alaska, the word "borough" is used instead of "county." Like counties, boroughs are administrative divisions of the state.
Each borough in Alaska has a borough seat, which is the administrative center for the borough. The Municipality of Anchorage is a consolidated city-borough, as are Sitka, Juneau, Haines and Yakutat.
Most of the state's area, however, is part of the vast Unorganized Borough, nearly as large as France and Germany combined, which has no borough-level government at all. The United States Census Bureau has divided the Unorganized Borough into eleven census areas for statistical purposes."
