Does anyone know why the internet providers in Alaska still charge by usage? Does it have to due with underdeveloped internet infrastructure, distance from servers in the lower 48 or is there some other reason? I haven't paid by usage since the days of dial-up, so I find the pricing structure for internet in Alaska interesting.

They charge by usage because they can. And it doesn't do any good to whine. Cause that's just the way it is.

^I was just about to say the same thing... because we will pay for it. And the overage charges are absolutely obscene. I'm pretty sure the ISPs are somehow in bed with the cable (tv) companies, which is also ridiculously expensive. People will pay what the market will bear, which happens to be quite a lot in Alaska.

I thought that might be the case but I didn't know if maybe there was a technical reason.

Well if you want to get technical about it, it's because they're greedy SOBs.

Is there any company that offers "portable Internet"? Kind of like how AT&T (and others I'm sure) let's you use your cell phone as a hot spot, but with a device (it fried my phone within two months of using it)? I travel a lot for work and it'd be awesome to have Internet wherever I go (out past Meadow Lakes it is super slow when I try to hook up to my clients' or friends' wifis).

Anyone know?

My AT&T hotspot is supposedly 4g but seems very slow up north of fairbanks. They do make hotspots that are their own seperate device and not connected to your phone. They come wih their own number and service plan.

I have the AT&T 4g hotspot for work and it is pretty slow in North Pole... or, outside of North Pole, I suppose.

Sweden, are you referring to an air card? I used to have one for work at a previous employer and it worked pretty well.
