At the moment I am a senior in high school and I have been thinking about moving to Alaska for a very long time. My only problem is I don't know if I should go to college there or not. I feel that going to college there would get me used to living there and maybe even show me that it is not really the place I want to live in. I have been there once and yes, i have been there in the winter and know how cold it gets and I just love it. Anyone got any ideas of what I could do?

Some thoughts:

Does the University of Alaska offer the major you're interested in?
What are the career prospects in Alaska for your major after graduation?
What is the out of state tuition going to be for you in Alaska vs. the in state tuition you would get staying where you are?
You could go to college wherever would be best for your major, and work summers in Alaska.

Good luck!

I have not started looking at colleges up there yet because I have only just started my senior year but I am planning on getting a major for graphical art/design. Also the idea about going to whatever colleges is best for my major and working summers in Alaska is something I may consider. Thanks for the help!

That sounds like a sound plan. As far as I know the University of Alaska does not have particularly competitive programs in those fields, so you'd be paying out-of-state rates for a program that is not all that highly rated. There are tons of summer tourism jobs in Alaska, and many also arrange room and board, so you could go home with some nice spending money for the following school year, and test out different areas of the state as well, to maybe move up after college graduation.

Being from California, you likely would qualify for tuition rates under the Western Undergraduate Exchange program. You wouldn't get full resident rates, but you don't pay out-of-state rates either....something in between.

It's remote. The only access is by ferry or jet. It rains. A lot.
What attracted you to Juneau?

Primarily a job offer.

I've been offered jobs in places like Saint Paul and Sand Point, but turned them down because they were TOO remote with no jobs for the wife.
