I would stay away from SE medical facilities if you have cancer and want to maximize your chances of survival.

Each summer they are in a different location.

I'm not sure of the pet restrictions but it might be a nice, free way to check out different areas of Alaska for your retirement without spending extra money.

Good luck!
All of this ^^^ There are so many opportunities to volunteer with the state and national parks. There's one in Juneau where you can stay in a small apartment at a museum in return for volunteering a few hours a week.

Umm, I have lived in AK for about 20 years for my current job and have lived in research field camps in various places in the state for 10 more before that, so think I should know something about all that.

Thank you all for the responses! I have been lurking around on real estate sites for SE and so far haven't found anything of interest that's affordable. But, you never know. I don't have major health issues now, but fully realize something will crop up eventually. My "orthopedic issues" will mostly keep me from that true bush living. Kenai Peninsula is sort of checking off boxes and there seems to be quite a variety of situations to look at. A couple of local folks told me they had moved away from there because of the increasing drug-related crime. I suppose you can find that anywhere though. I'm sure the attitude of each particular community affects how actively they respond and reject that, so maybe that would be good to know.

What about Skagway? Nice small community that is fairly close knit. In the summer you have the tourists (in waves) and can have a nice little part time job or volunteer.
Love that town!

And maybe you should read the OP before you say what you just said. The OP lives in Alaska already and has for many years!
