The Bering Strait is about 53 miles in width at its narrowest point, so on clear days, Russia should be quite visible from the Alaskan side.

Yes, from Little Diomede island you can see Russia. And if you're using binoculars it's quite possible to see Russian soldiers looking back at you. I've been out there twice and the people that live there have some interesting stories to tell.

Well, actually no. You can't see Russia from Wasilla (Palin's house at the time). Plus, it was Tina Fey who said that, not Palin. Funny though.

Tina Fey was well established and had actually quit working at SNL when Palin came around.

Palin said that Russia could be seen from an Alaskan island. That's true.

What Fey said was very funny, but not true.
