Can you walk from the airport into town easily? It looks close, but not sure if there is a sidewalk.

Do you need a sidewalk to walk? I think most locations in Alaska do not have a sidewalk. Just walk. Sidewalks aren't needed.

I remember in high school walking from Mt Edgecumbe School into town across the bridge.
I picked a random spot in town and it looks like it's a mile & half: https://goo.gl/maps/uw8tc6sbh3H2
And Google street view appears to show a sidewalk.

I don't need a sidewalk but don't want to dodge cars while pulling my luggage. The bridge looks like it's very narrow.

What cars? Welcome to SE Alaska, where traffic DOES NOT rule.

Like Stafford, I walked it once many years ago. As I recall, it's a bit further than it initially appears, but entirely doable.

Chances are excellent that you'll be walking in the rain, so just be prepared for that.

Not sure its worth schlepping your bags 1.5 miles when cab ride is probably 10 bucks.

Yeah.

Sitka has a bus system, too.

If he's flying all the way from Texas, a moderate length walk may be something to look forward to. I can relate to that, though my travels are with a backpack only.
