Dress in layers. T-shirt, flannel, sweat shirt, jacket. T-shirt or insulated underwear. Long johns or flannel under jeans. Gloves should be lined with thinsulate and rated for -20 or better, mittens over gloves when possible. REALLY good hat.

Most of the clothing you can get outside can be used as long as you are only going from the car to a store and back.

Winter in Ft Wainwright can be bitterly cold, and people don't dress for style for the most part.

You will be in for a shock...but layers are important. Make sure you have good gloves and boots, as your extremities get colder faster. You will learn to deal with it, and it's worth it for the scenery.

Don't worry...you're not alone: my wife is from Jacksonville, FL, and also had never seen or touched snow, until I moved her up here 6 years ago. She bought all the clothing needed at the local stores in Anchorage. (Sears, Walmart, etc) Along with the suggestions of the others, I'd also recommend carrying a small miniature flashlight in your purse. Why? Because this time of year in Alaska, one drives to work in the dark, and afterwards drives back home in the dark, and a small light to see when unlocking your door, looking for stuff in the car, etc, is really handy. If it's -20F out (and it can easily be colder), you don't want to spend any extra time searching for stuff in the dark. I keep a little penlight in my shirt pocket all the time. Here in south-central AK, the sun doesn't come out until like 11AM, and then it goes down again around 3...and this problem is worse the farther north you go...(like the Ft Wainwright area) But...in the summer the problem is reversed: the sun doesn't go down at all in northern Alaska...strange to look out the window at midnight, and see sunlight. And...in June, July,Aug you will likely see some 90-degree days up there from time to time...
Ft Wainwright is next door to Fairbanks, Ak, so has similar weather. (a HUGE extreme between summer and winter)...
