I do know of a farmer who would often let people live on his property in exchange for work...but he expects real work, hard work, REAL HARD WORK. Most people moved after less than a year. I don't think he does it any more.
If it was fair and equitable, he'd have a line of people waiting for such a deal. My guess is that he was wanting several thousand dollars worth of labor per month, for a space of land barely worth a few hundred.

i've done farm work in situations like this. i was expected to work 8 hours a day, just like anyone. the work was hard but the food was good and the air was clean.

The OP should consider moving to a place like Oregon where the climate is relatively mild in the western part of the state. You would find more people that share your idea of living off the grid and would have access to more resources for making that happen.

Land in Oregon is insanely expensive, and is one of the worst options due to stringent laws which dictate what you can, and cannot, do to your property. It would be near the bottom of my list.

Maybe appalachia might be closer to what fits. It's a bit more temperate and a bit more hospitable. Better chance of surviving the weather and such. There are critters to eat, crops to grow and Bubba Joe John and his sister/wife Betty Bubba Joe John to help gittin aquainted and such.

You could get a marketable skill makin' class A shine and move to where ever you want after that.

You wouldn't even need shoes or teeth!

You might even shoot at some bubblin' crude, who knows?
