i was watching a prison show that talked about Alaska's crime rate being one of the highest ones in the country. is this true? i find that to be quite surprising. if it's true, why do you think it's so high? well, even if it is or isn't high, i still plan on going there one day .

I grew up in SE Alaska and it's no surprise to hear we have mega high crime rates. Our drug use is AWFUL, alcoholism rates out the roof, lots of domestic violence and such... Besides, there aren't near as many people, so you have to take in mind that you don't have to have a murder every day like you do here in Houston for it to be considered horrible. While I was in high school I can remember several cases of people murdering their spouses, a parent killing their child, a student shooting a 'friend' in the face, plenty of drug busts... I lived on an island, so... A bunch of people on an island with gloomy weather, too many drugs, and no place to go? Just seems like bad news.

HOWEVER. It is the most beautiful place I've ever been, and unlike anywhere else. So as long as you're not getting involved in the drug world or finding abusive spouses or whatever.. You should go! :P

There are places here which are relatively free of crime. Areas in Anchorage like any city are areas to avoid but in general the crime here is much less in my experience. Speaking of that though I am a bit surprised that the monster who shot the Anchorage police officer has not been found yet.

I came here by way of New Orleans and can tell you that the crime is almost nonexistent by comparison. Alaska is the most beautiful and friendly place I have ever been, period. I am quite glad to be a resident and don't ever plan on going elsewhere. Just my .02.
