You certainly aren't getting that here in the Capital District (at least, not in any nice & safe area). In TN, I didn't work and the economy was terrible (hard to find a job). However, because it was so inexpensive, it didn't really matter. Here, I do work, the economy is better - but my money definitely helps us afford the area.

For me, it's a toss-up. We love the northeast, we'd like to live here permanently and be near family. However, I do miss the low cost of living in the south.
Keep in mind that the Capital Region is probably the most expensive area of Upstate NY north of the Hudson Valley. Much of the rest of Upstate NY is on par with Southern areas in terms of overall cost of living, actually. So, it may be a matter of looking in another part of Upstate NY for a lower COL.

Mr. Smarty Pants, I currently live in South Carolina! And I don't bash the South. There are certain aspects I greatly dislike. Sorry, but I don't find the racism, poverty, and segregation to be a wonderful thing! I think a great deal of what happens here is VERY sad and stuck in time a hundred years ago.

Why would the news put on something racist? It's pretty much all white people on the news! They show plenty of stories that cover the poverty. Do you think Southerners see what they say as racist? No, they don't. It's a way of life here.

Just because something is on the news doesn't mean it's an accurate portral either. There's plenty of spin on every news story out there.

I never lived in the Albany region, but I've worked out of the area for many years. We currently live in Northern Dutchess county and are looking forward to getting out of NY. Our taxes go up every year and we're about capped off. When you're a single income blue collar red blooded American family of four and paying $6000/yr in taxes for a very average house...it's time to get out!! Tennessee, here we come and never looking back :- )
