Hey all...I'm asking questions again! Now that I have all the info I need for where to live...I'm wondering about jobs. I have been looking and it looks okay...not great...but, okay. My wife is a certified teacher (not a great career right now, I know) and I have a Bachelor's in History. I am looking to work for the government...I'm just wondering how hard it is to get in. Is it extremely difficult? I've taken civil service exams before and know how to go about doing all of that. I guess I'm just wondering how competitive the job market is in the area. Here in Ithaca it is really, really competitive. I also don't mind doing "whatever" job it takes until I land a better job. I know that landing a decent job takes time. Any thoughts?

I imagine it wouldn't be as competitive as it is in Ithaca because there are more state jobs available, but it's still tough. There are plenty of jobs at OGS in the Empire State Plaza, but "who you know" plays a major part with getting in with that department. So...make friends in high places? Climb that public sector ladder!

With a history degree, I feel like your dream jobs might be in either the Capitol building or the NYS Museum. In the Capitol, they have the Hall of Governors, with all their portraits and blurbs about their history, along with a timeline of NYS legislature. It's really cool, actually! Last time I was there, a man introduced himself as the curator for that display and gave me a tour of the hall. Across the stairwell on that same floor is the Hall of New York, with different historical paintings of sceneries all across NYS, from NYC to WNY, with blurbs about their history as well.

Thanks for the info! I was just wondering BC I only have a Bachelor's degree...not a Master's. In Ithaca one pretty much needs a Master's to even be considered for worthwhile jobs.
