Default Try Resselaer or East Greenbush.

Rensselaer is directly across the river, cheaper, with less major crime. There's good bus system- easy commute Albany. Just outside Rensselaer limits is the East Greenbush School district- I'd try to get my kids there before any Albany or Rensselaer schools.
Used to live in all three areas.)
