Hi People,

I'm a British guy who has lived in California, Nevada, Arizona, Ohio and in Maine. Right now im back home in Scotland, but I'm considering moving back to the US. I just wondered if anyone would be kind enough to give me some information on what Albany and it's surrounding areas offer?

I really do love residential neighborhoods, with detatched houses, nice yards, and a real sense of community. I also love a vibrant downtown area with bars and restaurants, and generally just an area where people do their thing. And finally, in my head I have pictured are lovelly neighborhood that looks lovely in the summer months, and I could sit in my yard with a fire, listening to crickets, frogs, and even watching some fire-flies, and in the winter months, a neighborhood that looks beautiful with all the snow and homes decorated with Christmas lights and decorations - this is definitley the dream.

Is there anywhere that matches what I imagine?

Thanks,
J0hnnyMac.

Just out of curiosity...what made a guy like you even think about Albany, NY? Not that Albany is a terrible place, but just seems interesting that you'd ask about it when you've lived in states like CA.

As far as what you described you're looking for, it made me think of when I lived in Albany. The New Scotland neighborhood would be great for you. Helderberg too. Most homes in the Helderberg neighborhood just south of New Scotland Ave. are single family (some duplexes) with small yards in the back. There are lots of bars, restaurants, banks, and convenience stores along New Scotland Ave.

The neighborhoods both have a great sense of community. Neighbors are always willing to help each other out. Whether it's raking leaves or pushing a car out of the snow. Lots of people decorate during the winter and it really does look nice.

Both of those neighborhoods are very safe and parking is usually not too bad. It can sometimes get jammed up in the summer when everyone hits the bars after work, but other than that, you shouldn't have a problem.

Albany does have a lot to offer especially in the summer months. There are plays in Washington Park, and events along the Hudson River. It's a short trip to the Adirondacks which have the most beautiful scenery. The Helderberg mountains are also just a 20 minute trip and overlook the city. Albany is close to Saratoga Springs which is a vibrant city which boosts a very famous racetrack. And Vermont is only an hour away. There is a lot of skiing there in winter.

One of the attractions about Albany is that it is a short trip to New York City, Boston or Montreal. It is centrally located which is very helpful if you like to explore.

Albany has many suburbs - Delmar, Guilderland, Loudonville, Colonie, Niskayuna. The area has gone tremendously over the years. You can choose to live in the city or one of the many suburbs.

In short, the area does have a lot to offer. Having lived in California for a couple of years, I found that I missed the rolling hills and comfort of small towns. Depends on what you like to do whether or not the area would appeal to you.
