I don't remember where I heard this from. Is it true that you can't get on a plane with a NM drivers license?

I do it every time without a problem.

Whatever noise there was about that in the past, it's yet to have an effect on anyone I've heard (and I fly frequently).

Regardless, I always bring my US passport with me whenever I fly -- no problems there.

There was an extension to the requirement, as far as I know the extension is indefinite. New Mexico (and several other states) explicity allows illegals to get licenses which does not comply with the US rules for positive id. The rule was to go into effect at the beginning of this year but has been put on hold until New Mexico and the other states with varying rules can either be brought into compliance or change the US rules.

Here's a chart of states in compliance with the Real Id Act and those that aren't.
States in gray are not in compliance, but have not enacted legislation refusing
to comply. The red states have enacted legislation directly refusing to comply.

The whole thing's a bust at this point.

No it is not true.
Any aircraft in the United States that you can board with any other United States Drivers License can be boarded with a valid New Mexico Drivers License.

It will be tested again as I drop my wife off at the airport again...

Ah......NOW I understand why there are so many states opposed to the Act. Can't say that I blame them - yet another intrusion by the federal government into what should be a State issue. Feds don't need to regulate state drivers licenses. The feds already have an ID with proof of citizenship - it's called a passport.

Good, broad overview of the Act for anyone else who is curious:

No, it's not true.

The Dept of Homeland Security says NM Residents have until Dec 2014 to get a passport (if the state doesn't come into compliance by ending the practice if issuing driver's licenses to illegal aliens).
