My spouse and I are semi retired and thinking of moving to Albuquerque. We've visited many times and love the area, weather, people, etc. What we don't know much about are the neighborhoods that would be right for us.
We don't need to know about school districts or any of that jazz. What we're looking for is a place to rent where we wouldn't need to drive to get to what we need. We'd like for pretty much everything from banking to grocery shopping to restaurants, hair salons, etc. to be within easy walking distance or a short bus/cab ride away.
You know, an actual self contained neighborhood, if such a thing still exists. Convenience and safety are key. (Heavy on the CONVENIENCE part. We're getting old and we're tired of farting around, lol.)
We'd be looking for an apartment/condo to rent while we decide if we want to buy something at some point down the road.
Surely there must be such an area somewhere in greater Albuquerque?
Nob Hill/UNM might fit the bill... it's kind of a university vibe, though, with college kids around. Do you want that?
There is an apartment complex called Broadstone Estates - it is a large apt. complex with a wide range of tenants, but it is gated, in a nice part of town, and you could walk to a shopping area with groceries, coffee, Great Clips, bank, a few food locales, urgent care, etc.
There are definitely going to be other areas that I just don't know about, but those come to mind right now. You are right about all the good things about Albuquerque, but it seems like kind of a driving town to me. Those "self-contained" neighborhoods are pretty rare in this town, for some reason.
Also, the uptown area is another consideration. Indoor and Outdoor mall within a couple of blocks from each other. There is a new apartment building next to the outdoor mall, a Trader Joes...etc...etc...
Thanks for the recommend, crackiswhack (your screen name makes me grin). I had considered looking in Nob Hill but somehow was under the impression that it isn't all that self contained. As for the UNM area, I like the youthful energy of University areas. We haven't yet reached the "Get the hell off my lawn!" stage of old age crankiness.
We're just tired of fighting traffic, and it may be that within a few short years we shouldn't be behind the wheel of a car anyway-- for everyone's sake. So we're keeping that in mind as we look for a place.
I do like parts of the Central Ave area, too; I'm not as familiar with many of the more outlying neighborhoods.
I leased a loft here 2009-2010 while I got a feel for the ABQ real estate market. I loved it! It was very-very convenient to EVERYTHING (execpt the north west side/Rio Rancho but I never had a need to go there).

I so appreciate your input, NMHacker. I guess I'll be concentrating on Nob Hill and uptown as my starting point. Thanks!

Thanks N8. I took a quick look and it seems perfect-- except I forgot to mention that we have a small dog and The Lofts don't like her.
New question: I saw that there is a Studio 6 out on Osuna Rd in the northeast. We've stayed briefly at other Studio 6's in other areas of the country and though they aren't exactly luxurious they were adequate and safe for the short term, and they accept pets. Does anyone know how safe and/or inconvenient that would be for a brief stay if we decided to just come to ABQ and then find an apartment?

I'd suggest you call/email the office and ask.. some folks had dogs when I was there. A number of the lofts are privately owned and some are owned by the developer, so the pet restriction may vary from unit to unit.

Aha! Thanks.
