Wow. Picked the two intersections in town most worth avoiding.

Louisiana is less bad if those are your only 2 choices, but I recommend you keep looking.

Avoid places with unbelievably cheap rent as they attract people with unbelievably cheap morals (among the hardworking poor).

If you are getting a 1 bedroom for much under $600-700/month, skip cable because you can watch Breaking Bad out your living room window. :-)

You can't just go by street names. Louisiana and Central, for example, are both streets with both decent and terrible stretches. Where they meet happens to be a pretty sketchy area.

You can research rentals in an apartment guide (offered free on newspaper racks) or in classified ads. If you are thinking of renting sight unseen, do yourself a favor and spend your first week in a hotel and look for an apartment in person so you can see what you are getting into.

Stay away from those areas. They are horrible! What can you afford for monthly rent?

I'm currently paying $575/month (plus utilities) for a fairly nice 2BR (w/d in apartment, good central heating/cooling system) in one of the legendary bad parts of town and so far I'm loving it. The street is a lot quieter than where I lived downtown. Of course, lots of people wouldn't live downtown either.

My new landlords seem pretty careful about who they rent to, however, and it's a very small "complex" (if that's what you'd even call it). Both of those things contribute to making this place liveable.

This is beside the point of the original question though, really. I still wouldn't want to live at either of the intersections mentioned, and would particularly recommend someone not moving there blindly. I must say though that I used to regularly get the bus at Central & Coors, when I would go to the Albertson's (or sometimes the Smith's) there. I heard some pretty crazy talk about drug use, saw some public drinking, and had people ask me for money, but I never had any real problems.

There's an entire restaurant thread at the top of the forum. Look for my posts....I tend to recommend a lot on here, also on Urbanspoon.
No diner in ABQ should be without http://www.nmgastronome.com saved as a favorite.

As far as neighborhood recommendations, where are you working, if you are working?
