Thank you for your quick response! I have been looking at the Hotel Albuquerque as well, only difference is the room at this other hotel is literally half the cost. Will have to discuss it with my traveling partner and make a decision. Thanks again!
Other opinions/suggestions are welcome as well if others have them.
The Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn is just a couple of blocks north of Hotel Albuquerque. It is by the freeway but still close enough to Old Town. The Hotel Albuquerque bar and the St. Clair Winery and Bistro are nearby. The prices seem to run about $80 a night, at least on weekdays. But I agree with a previous poster that the bars in downtown or Nob Hill would be more of interest to you - however walking from downtown back to your hotel by Robinson Park late at night may be unsafe. Maybe spring for a cab.
The entire corridor is safe day or night and completely tame, especially near Robinson Park. If you don't feel comfortable walking down Central Avenue, detour one or two streets over to the north or south and walk through the immediate residential neighborhoods, which are some of most affluent in the city. But that seems like a lot of walking if your ultimate goal is simply to get a drink somewhere. In Old Town, Seasons has a nice outdoor patio. So does Little Anita's. But they're not "bars" really. I'd suggest Hotel Blue downtown, early night out to Seasons in Old Town to quench your curiosity, then back downtown to Anodyne or Sister.
I would concur with what's been said above. Old Town's certainly a "must" visit for any tourist, but that said, there is no real "bar scene" (certainly not for 20-somthings). University/Nob Hill further down on Central (E of 25) would be more suitable. Even Downtown has a nice scene. All perfectly safe (with the usual "be surrounding aware" cautions of any place). I've actually stayed at the Hotel Albuquerque as well. It's very nice, but only really central to Old Town if you don't have a car.
I would def. splurge a bit on Hotel too. Low price could mean a bargain, or a downright dive (which you want to avoid). Even if you have to "taxi" it a few extra miles. You might spent a bit more, but it'll make your trip worth it.
Not sure where you are coming in from, but I've found, a night out here is fairly economical compaired to many places in the country. You'll prolly need to get out of Old Town to experience that (it's a tourist mecca). For Ex. - I often with head over to Kelly's (a pub/bar in Nob Hill) after work for a few beers and wings with co-workers. 2-3 beers and an order of wings is like $20. Which if you travel much, you'll realize is pretty cheap. Your nights out may be cheaper then you might think. Granted, some places are more expensive, but on the whole I've found "entertaining" here much cheaper then where I come from (Upstate NY).
