I live in Canada, on the west coast on an island, but used to live in ABQ. I'm heading down for a couple of weeks in July, and as an avid gardener was hoping for recommendations for good nurseries to visit. I can't bring back plants, but I'm always looking for interesting garden art, sculptures, etc. (Especially with a Southwestern/Mexican slant, as I'm trying to recreate a NM look in my house and garden. I just can't handle the grey, rain, and cold, but with a British hubby, am having a hard time talking seriously about relocating.)

Will be visiting from Santa Fe through ABQ down to Las Cruces.

Also, are there display gardens anywhere that are open to the public? I'm always looking for ideas.

Thanks!

Sharlene

You can start in Santa Fe:

Santa Fe Greenhouses: Drought Tolerant, Waterwise Plants (http://santafegreenhouses.com/tours.html - broken link)

Then when in Albuquerque you can visit the Biopark:
Rio Grande Botanic Garden - City of Albuquerque

I would recommend Osuna Nursery and Purple Sage Nursery. I've also heard the nurseries located in Jackalope are nice as well especially for native plants.

Isn't there a High Country Gardens or something with a similar name, located in/near Santa Fe? I recieved a catalog from them last year (not sure why since I live in the PNW) but it looked like a great place to go.

Jackalope is great for garden/house art in the southwest/Mexican/NM style.

I do believe Jackalope is a retail outlet for High Country Gardens.

Default Thanks!

Thanks a lot for all your suggestions! (It's nice to have a list -- and then I get to make another list of good places for lunch or dinner near each nursery!)

I would 2nd this one - good plant selection & knowledgeable staff.

Another place that's good but rarely mentioned is the Santa Ana Pueblo Nursery. Heading up 550 from I-25, you turn right as if you're going to the Santa Ana casino, and the nursery is then on the left. Small, informal place - they have great plants and a laid-back approach.
