In Albuquerque there are many, but one restaurant in ABQ I especially like not for New Mexican but for a menu with a twist on comfort food that you likely haven't experienced before is the Standard Diner. Check out the menu.. ..Standard Diner
Standard Dinner is nice, and correct not "New Mexican", but I have experienced in other parts of the world (close to these): Blue Crab Cakes, Country Fried Tuna, Fish & Chips, Onion Fried Calamari, and Tempura-fried Alaskan cod...
Albuquerque is not just "New Mexican" food... And I think I might start recommending it to visitors.

They have the best meatloaf I've ever had (bacon wrapped with golden raisins and gravy). The real mashed potatoes on the side were great too.
My choices for what's around/near-ish the Sunport would be El Modelo or The Frontier (the tortillas alone = YUM). Abuelita's is excellent as well, if you don't mind taking a stop off I-25/550 on your way to Santa Fe.
Note the that serving sizes at El Modelo are huge. One tamale plate can take me through lunch and dinner, with some left over for the next day (and I don't eat like a bird). So you definitely get your money's worth.
No - Albuquerque is definitely not just New Mexican food --- but that is what the opening poster was asking about and looking for suggestions about where to go.
There are other threads for other types of cuisine.....

No one has mentioned Grandma's..that was our favorite for what seemed to be real NewMexican food. If there is one place we miss in ABQ that would be it. Not only is it great food, there is so much of it, I can't imagine anyone eating it all and the prices are super cheap for what you get.
I eat there occationally, since it's near my office.
In my opinion, it's ok. Not great, but ok.
Being located on Broadway and Wheeler, it's not really in what I'd consider the South Valley though.
