What don't I like?
Right now, I am not real happy with the junipers. Although, the two Jehovah Witnesses who dropped by yesterday a.m. were quite nice.

Do what I do when I want to be left alone - tape a sign to the front door that says "Baby sleeping. Do not disturb". Works everytime.

Medical medical medical medical.
Did I say medical?
If you live in NM and have a great family doctor, consider yourself lucky. UNM told me they're looking at mid-October for new patients for regular doctors.
Back in Cleveland, I'd have a new doctor by lunch, and he or she would be nationally top-notch with impeccable credentials. Easily the most (and perhaps only) glaring issue with living in NM. In both quantity and quality.
Lots of nurse practitioners and PAs to make up for the shortage of MDs, and many are good (I have a good PA I recently discovered at UNM), but it's truly a big issue in NM.
I called a doctor's office, it took them four days to return my call JUST to tell me they weren't accepting new patients. Typical response time and typical attitude. but to be fair, they are swamped. But still, c'mon.

The doctor shortage could get worse if the UNM regents' takeover of HSC produces an exodus of UNM dotors. I don't know much about that situation, so it may be an unwarranted concern, but it sounds like there's a lot of unhappiness at HSC with that decision of the regents.

One thing that is different here, though I'm not sure I positively dislike it (maybe slightly?) is that there are a lot more people than I'm used to who pepper almost everything they say with laughs. And once again, it's both native born New Mexicans and transplants. It's seems almost apologetic.

(Yeah, I've been on a negative roll lately, but probably mostly due to unhappiness having nothing to do with Albuquerque.)

Couldn't agree with this more - when we lived in NM (we don't anymore, but I was a NE transplant for a while there), the only doctors available were awful. Finally ended up with a great one by almost dying (seriously) and spending a week in the hospital, then my specialist got me in with a generalist whom I miss. She was amazing, but still, I don't recommend the technique.

RE: Dealing with health issues in NM.

There is an appalling sense of futility one has when trying to get something simple as a prescription filled at a pharmacy in ABQ had techs that did not know how to spell my husband's first name (a very common name) and to make a long story short, we were lied to, said our insurance declined coverage, and we had to pay out of pocket for a prescription that was normally covered anywhere in the US. Overall eventually when we returned home to Ny I had to call our carrier, they confirmed the mistake was due to a spelling error! shelling a few hundred bucks that was part of our vacation here was a bit of a drag. If I moved to ABQ I'd become a health nut to avoid doctors and the pharmacy tech.

Now for the stuff I liked:

This was my 3rd or 4th visit to NM, the ABQ area, and we visit over summers. I visit friends who have retired to ABQ. I also have had friends who grew up here, and I have also visited for months at a time. As an earlier poster stated 5 years ago, there is a sense that some retail chains have forgotten about their 'outpost' in ABQ. I completely understand that sentiment, coming from NYC. If you give a ****e about fashion for example, ABQ is not the place for you. That said, 5 years later than the OP on here I have to say, I loved MOST of the cuisine, the sushi here was horrible though IMHO. Everyone here seems super friendly, and I unknowingly visited some doggie parks that were in supposedly questionable neighborhoods. Not a problem! Passed a fellow with a friendly dog who just happened to be a pit mix, and I am sure as he headed to the other side of the playground a deal was going down over a cellphone conversation but hey, I am used to that growing up in NYC. the amount of crime, car theft incidents etc, are on par with Los Angeles, NYC crime. I guess it would be a shock if one was coming from, say a fancy suburb. I love the lower cost of living, and I'd take dust storms over smelly NYC summer garbage stench and rudeness any day.

I find it to be a more friendly tone. East coast is notorious for the go go go ******* like attitude. ABQ is more in tune with that of the NW, although even friendlier in my opinion. This should be apositive, and definitely not a negative... whether you believe it to be genuine or not :P

But I mean, the literal laughing mixed in for no reason, so much of the time (with some people). That's a turn off to me. Say what you have to say. Maybe part of the problem is I really don't know how to interpret it.

I miss the go go go.

(I've said it before, and it sounds funny to say, but I really don't value friendliness much. Consideration, politeness, helpfulness: yes. Friendliness: not really. I am basically an introvert. I am not into lots of talk with random people. I am very selective about who I form real friendships with. Too many friendly people are also boring.)

Well, that's your personality, and everyone is a unique snowflake . I find dealing with people who are positive and friendly to be a much more joyful experience. As I made a point earlier, east coasters just strike me as largely unfriendly, having spent 6 years of my life in northern Virginia. I'm originally from Seattle, so it's likely just my perspective and how I grew up. Cheers
