I'm moving to ABQ in the fall after I get married. I have a remodeling business here in Kansas City. We install James Hardie siding and quality windows. I consider myself a good contractor (reliable, do what I say I'm going to do, hire good employees that homeowners like and trust, work fast and do good work) and have made it through the recession here (although it's been tough). Would a new contracting business in ABQ be a good idea, or should I close up shop and look for a job when I move there.

I would learn how to work with EIFS, stucco, and roofing. You're glazing expertise may still be useful.

"Hire good employees" might prove very challenging here, at least at first. Not saying there aren't good employees to be hired, but the construction industry culture here is probably very different from what you're used to; it's much more about who you know.

I'd pick the third option: find a reputable business in town either looking to expand (*cough*) or an owner looking to retire who wants to hand the thing off with a bit of guidance (better idea). Knowing the local ropes is essential for any business, and none more so than construction.

This is true virtually everywhere, but no more so than here in NM. Not just the Albq area, but all of NM. Contractors who are reliable, competent and HONEST are in demand and in short supply!! Which filters down, unfortunately, to the quality of help the contractors can find here.

Conversely, those who meet all three qualifications are in such demand that it's hard to get them to take on new jobs if you're the one needing work done!
