I am talking about wine that costs hundreds of dollars a bottle. I have only had wine that's under $20 a bottle you buy in the store but I have wondered if you really notice a huge difference in the those super expensive bottles of wine. Any opinions based on experience?
I am not a fan of wine but I have had several glasses of over 100 dollar bottle wines. the first time I had a sip of an expensive wine I was shocked at how much better this wine tasted than any I had before. for me it was like the difference between drinking a watered down glass of wine, or one that was a bit tart to drinking a nice rich smooth grape juice. it was yummy. not sure this would be true in all cases, nor do I think I could always tell a great one from a good one but yes, there is a difference. I think you can also find a great tasting wine in the lower price points.
For my 25th Wedding Anniversary in Paris, I ordered a Bollinger 1975. Cost me about 200 bucks for the bottle. Was probably ripped off, however, it was worth every dime and then some.
I enjoyed a bottle of 1947 Chateau Mouton Rothschild a few years ago. It was a very nice wine but the price had more to do with it's rarity than it's quality.
There are awesome wines at numerous price points. Some very costly wines are fantastic, and some suck. Same with many affordably priced wines. Personal taste counts for a lot.
Some expensive wines are worth it, if that's what you're into. I have had some great expensive wines, many times it's been the food they are paired with that really completes the experience and sometimes it's a complete flop. The fun for me is finding a great wine that is under $25, then I get to enjoy it over and over.
...... Some very costly wines are fantastic, and some suck.......
That's for sure. In the '80s I bought an Haut-Brion, supposedly a good year, and it was well, average. I suspect that the bottle may have been mishandled.
