Red's my favourite - big reds, not the light fruity ones. Australia's are predominantly full-bodied "Big Aussie Reds" so there's no problem finding a good one of those here.
My favourites are Shiraz & Cabernet Sauvignon, and blends of those. Penfold's out of South Australia makes very good wines - Koonunga Hill is a good drop, at a good price. Here it's about the $15 mark but I always buy them on special for about $10/bottle. I've seen it at Trader Joe's in San Diego for about $10.
GSM is also a nice blend: Grenache, Shiraz & Mouverdre. Grant Burge does a nice one of those. As does Henschke (Henry's Hill).
South Australia makes the best Australian red wines as far as I'm concerned - any wine I really like comes from South Australian vineyards 99% of the time: Barossa, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, etc.
As for whites, I'm liking pretty much anything out of New Zealand: Oyster Bay, Villa Maria, Crowded House.
Corks are pretty much out of fashion here in Oz and NZ. They're definitely not a sign of cheap wines anymore. 15% of wines end up "corked", which is a crying shame when you're talking about an expensive wine. Screw caps have about a 0% fail rate. And no worrying about whether you've got a corkscrew available anymore.
