I am told my peristalsis is slow.
I just started taking probiotic which is supposed to tone the colon and improve peristalsis.
and right now I am taking a laxative every day which I don't like to do, but doctor said to until I am back to regularity.
I'd be interested in hearing what has worked for others.

In the short-term, drinking caffeinated beverages like tea or coffee will get things moving.
Over the long-term, I'm not sure, but eating a diet high in legumes, vegetables, and fiber probably would be helpful.

Check if any medication you are taking may be contributing to your problem, if so see if there may be a better alternative.

My life history has been sluggish and even impacted bowels, so for me magnesium and Vit C taken thru the day keep me moving good. I also use AloeLax which is aloe vera based.

Yup ^^ - plenty of Vit C and mag citrate will do the trick.

Canned pumpkin! I have IBS-C and this is the only thing which has worked for me long-term. I got the idea because vets recommend it for dogs with cranky intestines. So I have three heaping teaspoonfuls daily - mixed with some honey to give it some pizazz. Actually, it's pretty good just plain if you get a brand which uses ripe pumpkins. Get the plain pumpkin . . . NOT the pumpkin pie mix! I get mine at Winco and I've found the house brand which is Santiam is tastier than Libby's. Libby's is denser (less moisture) and tends to be bitter. Santiam is invariably more moist and naturally sweeter than Libby's.

Also, do you have issues with dairy which is cow-based? I've always had issues since a baby - and it's not lactose intolerance - more complicated than that. Cow milk products lock up my innards like cement. But I can tolerate goat and sheep milk, cheese, yogurt without a problem. Goat milk is really strong so I use rice milk (allergic to nuts and soy) and sheep milk is hard to find, but myzithra cheese (sheep milk) works for me.

I can't speak to the caffeinated products as I have a heart issue which is aggravated by caffeine so none of that for me. That sadly includes chocolate, too, which can also slow down the gut.

I eat lots of fruits, vegies, grains . . . everything that should give me happy innards, but pumpkin has been the magic answer. And, no, I don't own a pumpkin farm or have any stake in the industry!

Hope you find a workable solution. Good luck.

For myself, limiting fat intake has made a huge difference. I did the old "eat more fiber, drink more water" for ages, but if actually made thing worse until, on a suggestion from the gastroenterologist, I started strictly limiting fat, which can evidently slow down digestion. Literally within a couple of days, motility sped up and the chronic constipation and bloated finally stopped. A few times since, I splurged on some fatty foods (a little bit of French fries, a few too many walnuts) and the old problems came roaring back.

yeah I drink a ton of water, always have.
Never heard that about fat.
also glad to read that you got diet/nutrition advice from your gastroenterologist, bec. I have been thinking that a specialist is going to be more along the lines of cut and drug.
I guess not necessarily..

that's funny! I used to give canned pumpkin to my cat, for constipation.
thanks for your recommendations.

I don't know if I have dairy issues.
I'll have to find out about that.

what kind of magnesium to you take?
How much?

my friend rec Magnesium Calm, I haven't got that yet.

and glad you reminded me of AloeLax, I used to take that.

I take magnesium citrate occasionally; it was rec. to me for Lyme, when I had some persistent pain and also for sleeping.
I never noticed it helped with the sleeping, but then I don't take it regularly.

I've been taking a laxative which includes Senna and Cape Aloe.
this works, but I don't like to take a laxative for too long.

I tried a colon cleanse too, thinking that might get to the root of the problem, but that made me very uncomfortable the morning after.

yep, vit c is a good idea.
but I think some people have to take quite a lot til it works--

my situation is very intransigent!
