all you can do is try to find out the beliefs of the MD. I don't have the same situation as I do not subscribe to alternative medicine, but how my doctor relates to me is as important as how good he or she is I would say. As long as we are on the same track I am fine. I had to try 3 or 4 before I fund a PCP that I was comfortable with.
Almost all of my doctors are Chinese and Japanese and I have had no problems with them and scientifically studied supplements and treatments.
Funny you should mention this because I'm getting along just fine with my dentist and dermatologist - both of whom are American born, Asian women. I'd be willing to bet they grew up in households where their mothers used some natural remedies. They're also just more respectful, in general, though not as knowledgeable as you describe...
Most essential oils are not recommended to use "neat," but I use all oils neat and have no problems. Not sure what the recommendations are for Frankincense. It is a "master" oil - so powerful for so many things.
I think I read you live in No. Cal and I'm in So. Cal and we have many integrative MD's in this area, BUT many do not take medicare. My female IM does and I'm so thankful.
If I ever lost her, I would just have to find an MD who is open to alternatives and use them for the basics and continue to do my own alternative medicines...I've been doing it a long time so I'll just have to continue that way and talk to others and read etc etc.
Thanks for the link Jam, but this doesn't really cover my area of Northern California very much. I have used lots of local and regional research tools for this project. I'm resigned to the fact that this will be trial and error. Another one of my criteria is that I strongly prefer a female doctor and this further limits my pool of possibilities. I may need to be more flexible in order to widen my search...
I'm, admittedly, spoiled from such a wonderful relationship with my previous doctor. If I was used to meh, this would be sooo much easier
One more thought, when I spent the 10 yrs trying to get thryoid supported I did see two D.O.s who did take medicare and these D.O.'s were the younger crop who did NOT do bodywork but only the doctor stuff, so some D.O.'s are alternatively oriented.
Usually I would agree with this for sure. And years ago, I had a good experience with a DO before I found my GP. 2 of the 3 I've seen down here were DOs (thinking along these lines) and I was so surprised that they had zero interest in integrative/holistic therapies other than spinal manipulation.
The last one, actually, seemed truly turned off with alternative modalities and didn't hesitate to inform me that she knew nothing about such things. She was very pro pharma () and all of the associated rabbit holes that I try to avoid like the plague..
But thank you for trying to help! I really appreciate it...

One can go to 25 MD's and hear different things from each one. My daughter and her kids see a D.O. who does only manipulation, cranial work etc...and no scripts etc but does discuss alternative issues. I saw her a couple times and first time my body felt like almost a new body, then the subsequent times, nothing...she took Medicare.
I'm surprised it's this hard, unless you have some unreasonable things you do? Not saying you do.
NorCal should be a perfect area for a more open type doctor.
I guess I would lead with "I believe that the first line of health and response to problems should be with diet and exercise, and well researched supplements. If those things do not work over a reasonable amount of time, then Rx would come next."
If that matches your view, I can't imagine a doctor saying "nope."
I'm curious on this because I will be moving in a few years, and I'm stressed over finding new doctors. I've been with my GP like 20 years, my derm 10, my RA 7, and my Gastro for 15. They know me and we work well together.

I don't understand the question. You go to the doctors that are covered under Medicare. You listen to what they have to say. You decide what works for you and what doesn't work for you. You let doctor know you'll be looking at some natural solutions. Conversation over. You don't need to convert them or get their "respect."
