OH yeah that's the Colombian national sport... To throw tourists on the streets so they can get hit by cars. Are you for real? higher probability of this happening in Colombia?

To the OP: You will be safe for the most part in the large cities. The rural areas are not safe, I do not recommend them.

I simply can't do heat & humidty so I gravitate to the higher altitude cities of SA. Bogota at 8600 feet up, heaven! Quito at 9500 feet, more heavenly!
La Paz, Bolivia at 12,500 feet, well, that's going too far!

No matter where I travel, I thumb my nose at touristy areas. Mostly because it I don't feel as safe there. Give me a medium-sized city off the beaten track which tourists avoid, and I'm happier and feel safer.

I'm with you. I'm not a "heat person" at all. I love the cooler climates, cooler weather. Bogota is perfect all year round as far as I'm concerned.

I always stay away from the touristy areas as well when I travel. Completely takes away from the experience in my mind.

My problem with Colombia is that it has some of the most beautiful mountainous landscape in the world, but it is very dangerous to wander in those areas.

Kidnapping is a national sport there.

Sure if you are stupid and ignore warnings and go into a rural area you are risking your safety and well-being, but the country is far different today than it was back then. If we are looking for comparisons, I'd say the Mexico of today compares favorably with the Colombia of the 80's & 90's.

Yes, at one time, it was a national sport here, as well, during the Great Depression.

Furthur cuts in police budgets across this country could resurrect that.

Colombia is safer than it used to be. But Colombia is still extremely dangerous.

That is certainly a concern. Also you never know what you will get with new leadership in the government although I am hopeful the new President is the positive influence that Uribe has been.

I recently finished a bio of Frank Phillips, who started Phillips Petroleum.

During the 30's, there was an abortive attempt to kidnap one of his daughters in Bartlesville, OK, walking home from school one day, the rich lived under a great deal of fear back then. Bodyguards were essential.
