I'm planning a trip for next year. Is there a central shopping area or historical area?

I'm thinking about The Hotel Plaza that used to be the Marriott. Can you tell me if that's a good area for tourists?

Thanks in advance.

I lived in Buenos Aires for 3 years as an expat. As I tourist, I'd recommend to:

1. don't stay in downtown: it's noisy and dirty. Don't stay in San Telmo (just visit). It's sketchy.
2. stay close to the subway line, it's the best way to get around the city
3. The nicest areas will be near the Bosques de Palermo - look on the map (Green line of parks that stretches along the city)
4. Palermo Hollywood or Palermo Soho are lovely neighborhoods, I'd recommend them. Not so close to the subway line, but you can still walk a few blocks to it or get cabs.

If you're going to pay for a nice hotel, you might as well stay at a boutique hotel in Palermo

Happy Travels!

I've been living in Argentina since 2007, married to an Argentine with a 2 year old. I'd day this is some pretty solid advice. I was going to say "Palermo" or "Recoletta" but another area is to the north up in San Isidro also. Yeah, if you go to San Telmo or parts of "La Boca" go during the day and with small groups of people.

Colegiales is gorgeous but far away

I traveled to BA several times for business and stayed at the Marriott (required for work) which was actually a pretty nice hotel, lots of tourist type shopping as the hotel sits at the end of Florida Ave. It seemed fairly safe as long as you didn't act stupid and realized you were in a large city.

I haven't been to BA in a few years and I miss it..............

I was there in February, I recommend Palermo or Recoleta or the area downtown by Puerto Madero.

If you are coming from the US, cabs are VERY cheap even with the regular, non "blue" market" rate- like the equiavlent of $4-5 USD to cross town from Palermo to downtown.

I also agree with San Telmo during the day only.

If youw ant to save even MORE money call a "Remis" which is a sort of budget cab....ask someone for the number of a local Remicoop and they'll maybe even call for you
