They see Cuba and the DR and aren't excited by what they see.

Unfortunately when people leave farming they generally don't return. Farming is hard, precarious and other occupations usually pay more.

when Cuba was invaded it was a Spanish colony, that's where the enemy was at the time.

the USA gave Cuba it's Independence after, with the condition the USA was given a lease on
Guantanamo Bay.

So Cuba has the USA to thank that's its not a Spanish colony.

ohhhhh my god. I wouldn't even know where to start with this. Theres no substance behind anything she said. These fake Puerto rican activist are too much. Lol And they're always born and raised on the mainland.

But give them what they want. Let Puerto Rico go. Cut them completely off. No U.S citizenship and no federal funding. Let them sell tomatos.

Indepenedce now!

Have you been to Central Florida recently? Puerto Rico is invading us!

But like the previous poster said, PR has sadly become a welfare island with serious economic and social issues. Give them independence!

That may be the best choice. The current common wealth status doesn't seem to be helping the island. I'm not seeing a big push by Americans in general for PR to become a state. So independence should be seriously considered by more Puerto Ricans.

Given that the Puerto Ricans themselves keep voting in favor of the colonial status quo (ok, ok; officially the 'The Commonwealth of PR' but we all know its a colony), the fact that the US invaded PR is probably not seen in a bad light. With the exception of a small minority, I'm willing to bet that the invasion doesn't incites much resentments among the Puerto Ricans. Most Puerto Ricans I know are quick to recognize that PR is in a horrible situation, but they also see what's going on in neighboring Spanish American countries too and are greatful PR isn't in as bad a shape as those other places. They recognize that the reason that is so is due to none other than the close relationship PR has with Uncle Sam.

In Cuba, which was also invaded by the US during the same war, the public perception of the US invasion may be different from Puerto Rico's. Or maybe not, because nearby Dominican Republic was invaded twice by the US during the XX century and feelings towards the US are some of the most uniformly positive of perhaps any Latin American country. I think the only place in Latin America that is probably more pro-US than the DR is Puerto Rico itself.
Very interesting.

One could make a similar declaration within the USA itself by interviewing Government-hating states-righters of which there are many (but still a small percentage of the overall population) and concluding we have a civil war going on .
