I've actually had some of the same worries about a job. I wanna move there so bad I can taste it..but I am fearful of not having "the job." I think I am very marketable...I have a BS in Psychology and currently work with the mentally ill and those that have drug/alc addictions in a hospital setting but I am still afraid of not having something lined up. I do agree with the not lying on your address because if they find out, they could question your honesty altogether and ruin a great opportunity.

If you are sure you want to live here, have some money saved, and are able to tolerate some uncertainty, there are jobs to be had. There is also, from what I have seen, a lot of seasonal work in the summer.

Perhaps I am unusually lucky, but I got the first "OMG, money is running short and I have bills to pay" job I applied for. Now, a few months and exactly three applications/interviews later, I just started a job I with a real future, that I truly enjoy, with a company I will stick with until I retire.

Unfortunately, those jobs no longer exist in most fields unless you're a teacher or a government worker, and even then there is doubt.

Actually, budget cuts in many states/communities have made teaching one of the *less* secure jobs out there. People do keep jobs for years in my field; I've been to the retirement parties.

What is your field? Yes, I said 'teaching' carries doubt.

I work in an insurance underwriting department. It's a pretty secure position, from what I can see, with a good company that knows how to take care of its employees (they really *do* exist...they're just rare anymore.)

Molly - look on www.alaska.gov and find the link on the right that says something about "find a job". There were listings for mental health people. Check it out! There might be options for helping you relocate as well.

Do your own research. It isn't dark 6 months out of the year here. It isn't "freezing freak'n cold" in all parts of the state and some areas rarely even see snow. I'll take it over new Jersey any day.

Well for one, it isn't totally dark in the middle of winter. The state is a huge state and only certain parts of it remain darker than others. For instance, Anchorage got down to 5 1/2 hours of daylight in the winter. Plus, the ocean around Anchorage, does keep us warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Unlike the interior and the Northern Slope. But there are people that love the winter sports that can last longer here than in most places in the lower 48. You also have people that take vacations in the winter time to the lower 48 or Hawaii just to get away from the winter. You can't beat the beauty here in the summer!!!
