Last year when I drove up and back, the Taylor was mud and it caused the truck to have electrical issues with the windows, until it was cleaned out. I went thru two windshields, but those were courtesy of Montana and South Dakota. And ON a paved inter-state. The year before I had a rock hit and break the windshield in Utah. It could have easily hit the grill, hood, or headlights.

Seems like you need stone guards and windshield deflectors in the lower-48 too.

Your inner fender wells will take a beating (from rocks and mud) and you *might* get some minor rock dings on the rocker panels, but that should be it. No way to prevent the windshield from getting rocked - it's the luck of the highway draw. Usually Yukon's come with all season tires and not 'highway' tires, - I would just make sure I had good tires and a good spare. If the tires are 'ok' I might bring two spares in new tires that I would want to put on once I got there. That way you tear up the ones you will be replacing. I beat the sidewalls up on a couple of tires too. But I drove some off-road trails - so I can't blame that all on the Al-Can or Taylor.

On Edit: That chip seal is heck on tire life. You will wear down the tires twice as fast. If you have soft compound tires (low tread wear rating) or running heavy they will wear out fast if you have a lot of miles of chip seal. Last year most of the Al-Can when I drove it was chip seal or rock. The Taylor was unpaved dirt/mud. I talked with a lady pulling a fiver with a dually at gas station. She bought new tires for the truck in Montana and they were bald by Lake Watson. Fiver's tires were not as bad...

The vehicle has about 60K miles on it and the tires look as though they may have about 8K-10K worth of tread left. I was hoping to make the trip with these tires and then buy brand new when we make it to Anchorage.

Do you think that would work? Or must I get brand new for the trip? If so which tires should I get?

Toyo all season tires are great, as are Nokian all seasons. They cost a lot but are totally worth it.

8-10k left should be fine, but what type of tire are they? How many 32nd's of a inch do they have left?

I would also check load range of the tires - you know you will be loaded down. If the previous owner cheaped out they may have bought light weight tires.

This is a tough question to answer over the internet.

We made it to Anchorage, Alaska! Thanks to all of you for the helpful tips and advice.

We are staying in a hotel and house hunting. Looked at 8 of them yesterday.

1) Find a House (rental for now).

2) Buy the S4 but need to choose a cell phone company.

Welcome!!

GCI gave me a great deal on two smartphones for my wife and I and we are very happy with the service. You still can find better deals than the lower states.

Does GCI offer the S4? Also which towers does GCI use when you are in other states?
