So far it has been a fairly typical south central winter. Temperatures dropped to -20°F for a few days in December, and will probably do so again this February. Temperatures warmed up for about two weeks in January due to the Chinook Winds. We seem to be a little on the light side for snow, but that should change in March. The mosquitoes will start coming out in early April, and break-up should begin by late-April.

Well I've made it and already fallen in love.

So far I've eaten at Bear Tooth Theatrepub (excellent salmon chowder!) and been to Dimond Center Mall (& Walmart for groceries).

I just spent the last five years in
Honolulu & was elated to discover a gallon of milk at Walmart for $2.99! Milk in Hawaii is regularly priced at $7.99!

I'm looking forward to eating at City Diner (live nearby) & my friends/roommates tell me Village Inn is the place to go for anything chicken-fried. Having grown up in the South, that's music to my ears.

I appreciate everyone's help on this thread. It's been a great resource.

Any other advice, now that I'm here?

Glad ya made it, black!

You've already made a good start with Beartooth- many make it a weekly destination for winter treat, esp. on Monday indie movie nite. (Bring your own knife for pizza- for some reason them hippies don't cut the slices clean)

Village Inn Pie!

Welcome to Alaska. Now your adventure begins.

Do not forget to visit Gwennies for breakfast. It is an Anchorage institution.

Yeah I've been hearing I've got to get to Gwennies. I took note of Jackie's when we went to Bear Tooth.

How's Peggy's?

I find this thread interesting....in the reverse . One of my sons is going the opposite way....Alaska to Hawaii....to attend UH Manoa. Should be interesting for someone who was born and has lived his first 18 years here.
