Hi guys! I am having no luck in trying to find a price for 2 adults and a small car from Bellingham Washington to Seaward Alaska (then drive to anchorage) online. Has anybody made this trip recently? can you tell me the bare bones price as we would be sleeping on the deck in a tent and dont need a cabin or any of that fancy stuff I have found many ferry sites I just cant get a price from bellingham to seaward... thanks...

Mike.

I think your main problem is that there are no ferries that travel from Bellingham to Seward. You can get to Whittier, but you'll have to change ferries in either Ketchikan or Juneau. The ferry to Whittier starts from Prince Rupert.

Total cost for your trip would be $2,366 with ferry change in Ketchikan and $2,341 with ferry change in Juneau. This assumes your car is less than 15' long. The price changes at 10' and 19'. The deciding factor for which city to change in would be time between connections, which I didn't look at, but it could be hours or days. Also be aware that the ferry makes only one cross gulf trip each month during the summer and usually doesn't run during the winter.

Your best bet would be to take the ferry to Haines and drive to Anchorage from there. The drive is about 755 miles and can be done in 12-16 hours.

Ferry schedules can be found here:

I just made the trip in June. The ferry to Whittier only runs at the end of the month. I would also suggest going to Haines and then driving--it's a beautiful drive. Also, I didn't have a tent for the deck...my friend and I just slept in our sleeping bags in lawn chairs. This way we always had a place to sit (right next to the BC side of the ferry, with windows). If you bring a tent bring some camp chairs because otherwise you won't have a good place to sit and look at the beautiful inside passage. There's heaters on the ceiling of the solarium that help keep you warm at night if you sleep on the lawn chairs. Outside the solarium where the tents are set up it can get pretty chilly, not to mention noisy from the tents flapping in the wind. I brought my small pickup (over 15')--total fare was $1300. Worth every penny.
