Yes, I know that Google is my friend, but s/he's so impersonal! Doesn't let me know what s/he really thinks about a place. Always just plain information.

On the back of the Best Burger thread....

Where's your fave place to catch a movie? We like to go to movies on Sundays & Mondays if there's something good playing (so.. maybe 1 or 2x a month. Maybe.) But when we go, we have really enjoyed the dinner-movie kinds, where you show up and place an order and they bring you your adult beverages & grub. (here in San Antonio, they have a few places like that, and believe it or not its cheaper to get a pitcher of beer/margaritas, a real pizza and some hotwings & fries than getting 2x large drinks, a large popcorn and a candy!!!)

Where's your fave place to see a live band or go dancing? We're into all kinds of music though we shy from country/western and rap/hip-hop. Not to say we wouldn't enjoy them in the right setting with the right company, but we prefer other stuff. I especially like to get dolled up and go to the opera or a classical music evening or ballroom dancing.... or to get dolled down and go to jump up and down in a crowd to some Flogging Molly (who apparently haven't made it up to Alaska yet..)

How about mini-golf or go-carts? Roller rinks? (I know you have ice rinks!) Do you folks have those dollar-movie boxes at your grocery stores too? Are the libraries decent in places like Eagle River that are away from Anchorage?

I'm not thinking just for the kid.. I like doing kid-stuff too!

Default lots of choices

You're in luck. Anchorage has an orchestra, and there's always something going on, sometimes opera, sometimes classical. Here's a link:
ASO Calendar
Library system is excellent. There is a fairly small library in Eagle River, but they are moving to brand new digs in the new town center soon. Best of all, you can go online for books you want, put them on hold, and if they don't have them at the library closest to you, they will send it to whichever one you want, and let you know when it's there. They also have book club sets, you can pick up a dozen or so of some of the most popular books for your club.
There is also live theatre, Anchorage has three plus the university, Eagle River has one, and there is one in Wasilla.
I don't know about roller skating. Plenty of bars with live music on weekends, McGinley's Irish Pub is fun.

Yup, BearToth will be your place. Only be warned that it can get super crowded. Fortunately though you can reserve the booths in the back for up to a week prior to your show. Don't expect to get cheap food there though. The food is pretty good but sandwiches, burritos, etc all go for close to $10 each. And unfortunately, they don't serve hot wings. In fact you'll find that good hot wings are scarce up here in Alaska - add one to the Alaska downside list!

Burritos in Alaska but no hotwings??? Oh Noes!

Seriously.. I am all Mexican-fooded out, and I never thought I would say that because at least 20lbs of my body is directly attributed to Mexican or Tex-Mex food.

I had heard that the inter-library loan system was pretty good, nice to hear it verified.

I like orchestral music too. When I was in Germany we'd go to the AltOpera and they'd show silent movies but have a live orchestra to do the music. Very enjoyable.
