Hey everyone. I will be starting a job based in Livonia next month. I'm currently thinking of living in Ann Arbor and commuting to work. But I'm uncertain of whether the 20-odd mile commute is doable.

I've also been told that Ann Arbor is a nice place to live with a lot of things to do, even if the cost of living might be a little higher compared to Livonia. Can you guys tell me what you think of living in Ann Arbor and commuting to Livonia (in terms of traffic, travel time, snow clearance etc.)? Thanks!

It's a reverse commute so it won't be that bad. You'll make it in 20 minutes most days. Ann Arbor is a good choice. Kudos on the new job.

It's not too bad. But there are lots of people at all times going both ways. However, save construction, I've never gotten in a traffic jam on M-14.

Takes about 30 minutes to get from the west side of Ann Arbor to Haggerty & 6 mile. So a bit longer to say Middlebelt & 8 mile

Don't give it a second thought. Live in Ann Arbor. Livonia is sort of... older. To be polite. Most of the homes were built in the 50's it seems. Nothing interesting going on. Ann Arbor is full of professionals, grad students, nice restaurants, quirky shops, cultural activities... gosh, so jealous of you. Congratulations on scoring a job. You'll love it there...

It depends on when you'll be driving, but there still is a good bit of traffic on M-14. M-14 & U.S. 23 get backed up quite a bit. Just yesterday the combined M-14/U.S. 23 spur (the short jog on the north side of Ann Arbor) was backed up for over 2 miles going west.

An alternative might be to live closer to Livonia and visit Ann Arbor every weekend. Of course, Ann Arbor is desirable place to live since they go out of their way to protect plenty of parks and open space, which contributes to a thriving downtown and business community. It's amazing that the dumb politicians in other cities haven't figured it out.
