Commute from Ann Arbor to Warren (Dearborn, Troy: high school, live in, prices)

I've recently moved to Ann Arbor (my spouse is in grad school) and I've been offered a job in Warren. It's a good job with the exception that the commute scares the pants off of me. I've driven it a number of times and it seems to take about an hour. However, I've not done it in the winter so I don't know how that might be and I haven't done it enough to know whether an hour is accurate. Any information you might have would be great. I've been taking 14 to 275 to 696 as it seems the most direct route.

Yeah that is the most direct route. Google maps says 51 minutes, but add traffic and its about an hour.

My mom drives from Dearborn Heights to Troy daily. The only really direct routes are up Telegraph or maybe Southfield. She takes sort of an indirect route (15 Mile runs through downtown B-ham, 14 Mile ends, 16 Mile is slowww all the way to Adams, and it takes generally an hour-ish to get there in the morning and an hour and a half ish coming home. In the winter it took her up to 2 1/2 hours one day, but other than that never beyond an hour and 45 or so.

Don't do it. You won't be happy with the traffic and commute time.....not to mention the price of gas ($3.69 today)......

I commute from Birmingham to Ann Arbor every weekday. It is what it is. A one hour commute is not that uncommon in this day and age, especially in large metros. I know one person who commutes 90 minutes to work in Birmingham every day - thinks it's too crowded anywhere in the tri-county metro. I knew one teacher in high school who commuted into suburban Chicago from Rockford every day. I have a bunch of friends who live in NE PA and Philadelphia who commute into NYC every day. It's all about priorities and whether commuting is worth it to you. FWIW, I don't think the Ann Arbor/Oakland County commute is too bad, especially if you avoid 8-9am and 5-6pm.

Thats a decent trip, I drove from Novi to A2 daily while completing my undergraduate for 5 years. 275 can seem like a nightmare sometimes although you are correct in your resoning, sometimes you can jump off on one of the mile road to escape a backup, other wise you are forced to take even slower routes. 275 has cycles.....630AM-830AM are ridiculous, rush begins generally around 430ish and is heavy till almost 6. 274/14 interchange almost ALWYAS hase incidents. 696 is scary in itself, most backups occur around the lodge and points east. If your lucking enough to travel to work in between these times it will seem like no one is around. Add 30 min minimum in the winter, more if lots of snow.

I would say an hour on a good day. Bad weather or an accident and that could be doubled. With gas prices rising is it still economical to drive that far?
275 and 696 east can get really backed up between 7:30-9. 4-6 going west.
