I'm sure that most of you have heard the news that the building topped out at 1,776 and the spire completed. But is it really a spire? The original plan called for a radome to enclose the bare steel in which we now see. Well that was ditched, and now all that was left was the bare steel. Should it be included in the buildings height?

.

A bare guyed mast.

No, I think a building's true height should be measured from street level to the roof of the highest occupied heated & air conditioned floor.

Spires, empty decoration features, & antennas should not be counted.

Uglier without the shrouding but since it was designed with one thing in mind...

There is different categories for sky scrapers and a single skyscraper may be in different categories depending on it's characteristics. Highest occupied floor, height with antennae etc.

Well in this case, it would be from the base of the building to the tip of the beacon.

No, neither spires nor antennas should be counted as part of the building.

Not sure If I'd say that spires shouldn't be counted. If we say that, what about church spires?

Well the spire is a part of the structure, the structure itself spans from street level to 1,776 feet. I think it's pretty thoughtful that they made it exactly 1,776 feet, but then again...if they were off by a foot or two, who would know?

I plan on getting my tape measure and boarding a flight to NYC on the day of its grand opening to be sure they did it right.

Spires are actually part of the building so they should be counted. Antennas can be added/removed at any time.
