Homes in most of the country automatically come with a basement because the foundation needs to be dug below the frost line and the cost difference between a crawl space and a full basement usually isn't very much.

More houses in AZ should include basements, it would cut down on A/C costs since people will just migrate to the lower levels of the home where cooler air sinks.

I've yet to find a house in AZ with a basement. It would be smart, but I also consider that instead of bugs getting in you could get scorpions crawling in your basement. I'll pass. But I hope that when I move next year out of state that I can have the luxury of a basement again!

The cost to put a basement in this hard pan caliche soil would cost more than the house itself that's above ground.

We're built into a hill, so have some basement. My work room down there is about 80 degrees when it is 120 outside. And it has almost no A/C getting to it.

24 hrs of backhoe work to dig a pool through that nasty stuff. Luckily we had insurance to cover a hard dig.

Here in the southeast, I think is has something to do with the sandy soil, but not sure. I would think that the ease of access to HVAC and plumbing and electrical that we have with basements, would be something that more builders would want to use. Everything is easy to reach, instead of having a nasty crawl space or having to jackhammer through a slab to run a pipe or find a leak.

The main reason to have a basement besides it being cooler is this. Man cave, theaters and extra bedrooms for storage.
