We have a smaller JC Pennys and the Sears is a small appliance and tool only kinda place.
Havasu has a genuine large JC Pennys store and Dillards I believe for Sears it would be a trip to Henderson/Vegas.

They do ice skate but they like roller skating. Yeah employment is a worry. I worked for the military as a civilian for 12 years, but we do alot of things. What kind of specialized skills are you talking? I have also been to medical school for transcription which I believe is obselete now.
For the girls, a move could be a make or break deal I guess no matter where you go. A small desert town may be worse than what they have now.

For specialized skills, pretty much anything that sets you apart from the huge unskilled labor pool in the desert. There's a lot of medical stuff, the usual professional offices (lawyers, accountants, architects, etc), a fair bit of IT work, some chemical and mechanical and manufacturing industries, even a Chrysler Motors proving ground. A lot of skilled folks transfer into town that possess skills that aren't home-grown in Kingman.

Lake Havasu as mentioned above has Dillards and JC Penneys. It is about 60 miles from Kingman. Bullhead City has a Target and a Kohls. It is about 35 miles from Kingman. You can get your basics here, but I frequently travel to Havasu, Bullhead and Las Vegas to do shopping for clothes, shoes, decorative housewares, etc.

Before up and all out moving I would rent a hotel, a car and spend a couple days perusing the area. Drive around the different neighborhoods during different times.
If you can talk shop with a local LEO and ask him your questions and concerns regarding whatever. A tip I learned long ago before entertaining a move to a new area.
Coming from NY, guessing upstate *could be wrong* I am guessing you have a decent pool of resources? Drive all over to Havasu, Prescott, Flagstaff and Payson.

This is exactly what we are planning on doing! We are going to spend about a week or so there, check things out, travel the area, maybe look at some houses, etc. We've driven through there before, but we were rushed. This time we're going to take our time.
