Came across this today. AZ has one of the highest poverty levels in the US, ranked with West Virginia coming in at #42. Obviously there is pockets of well to do around Phoenix and other areas, but this is staggering TBH and is one of the worst in the nation.

This isn’t surprising at all. We have lots of remote areas and a large amount of reservation land. This has nothing to do with Phoenix.

You were reading Wikipedia and felt compelled to randomly post about Arizona, in the Phoenix forum, and inform us we lived in the 42nd most impoverished state? What about the people in Alabama and Mississippi? Are the Mobile and Jackson posters not deserving of such news?

Considering the general lack of industry and amount of reservation land I don't think many would be shocked.

It’s referring to the Wikipedia “article”. It shows that it was last edited 13 days ago. I think the premise of this thread is useless, but I don’t know what you’re trying to insinuate.

Just very surprised, these rates are a % of the population, and I was not aware that AZ was indeed that impoverished. It literally ranks in the bottom percentile of states. Given all the growth in the state the past 2 decades I figure this would no longer be the case.

I do feel stats and articles like this are somewhat misleading. Arizona is a large state with lots of rural areas outside the major cities. It also is home to more than a few large reservations.

So the fact that the poor are living in rural areas and on reservations makes it OK? We have impoverished reservations right next door to Phoenix, too. Pretty much south through east. There is a third world quality to Phoenix with rich enclaves and adjacent swaths of abject poverty. That's true of most cities and even smaller towns in the US now, though.

Envy that Phoenix passed Philly for number 5 earlier this year?
