OK, so I am returning to Arizona for a hiking trip this fall and plan on doing some Arizona Trail. The base area will be Phoenix.

I have done a bit of research and see that there are 43 sections. Of those sections in the middle of the state, can anyone recommend one or two, as far as scenery and accessibility?

Thanks in advance.

Are you going to drive and park? Or use a shuttle service?

I haven't actually hiked on the trail. I've heard the Gila River Canyons and Superstition Wilderness sections are scenic.

Thanks for the responses.
Most likely drive & park although I have to give that one more thought.

I'll check out the hikearizonawebsite for more info. I actually did a bit more research over the weekend and am thinking about doing section 15 which is near Kearny. It's easy to get to, for one thing, and far enough away from Phoenix to make it interesting.

I was the support crew for a group of guys riding in the AZT300 bike-packing race. We had to stash water along that section, it's pretty dry out there.

This gentleman has the best AZT videos; he does the entire trail from Mexico to Utah and videos the entire thing. Loved the videos. He's very personable. Here's the list of the 42 segments:

He did a pre-trail video about packing his pack, too.

Ordered book on Ebay which arrived a few days back. Section 20 looks like the one I will do - Southern trail head is at the Theodore Roosevelt Dam -- big landmark and at intersection of major highways. Nice to have that in the area - hard to get too lost. Looks like a decent section as well as far as scenery.

If you are on facebook , The group moderator for Arizona Hiking has a 6 stop hike planned from now until december on certain saturdays-sundays along the Arizona Trail.
