Hi,

Ya'll have been very helpful in answering all my AZ. questions before...so I would appreciate your input again! My sister and 24 y/o daughter are coming to visit in May. Do you have any recommendations of some "must see" places to take them? I only work 3 days a week, so I have 4 days each week to show them around. They have both been to Vegas, but never to the Phoenix area. I was told Rocky Pointe is beautiful. Do you think it is worth the drive to go there? Any ideas for any more fun and exciting places to go. I have only been here a year, so I really don't know a lot of places to take them. I will greatly appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks So Much!

If possible, the Grand Canyon is a must-see! On your way past Flagstaff, you'll see the San Francisco Peaks, which are also quite nice, especially if there is still snow on the tops.

Crown King? Good lord...there's nothing there but a bar or two and it is a LONG and somewhat difficult road to get there! Sedona, Jerome...down south try Tombstone, it's fun and very historical. The Verde Valley has some really nice Indian Ruins and old Fort Verde...and Prescott has a lot of history and very pretty places to see, as well.

Also, the steam train to the Grand Canyon (leaving from Williams) is a great day trip...as is the Verde Railroad that leaves from Clarkdale.

South Rim must!!!
On your way south from Flag -- Sedona Sedona Sedona!!! -- BUT -- not by Oak Canyon. South of Flag, there's a wonderful unpaved road that is the drive of a lifetime! Scenery you can't see anywhere else, and that we've seen in a thousand old cowboy movies, that your guests will LOVE!

On Hwy 17 south of Flag, south of Mountainaire, just south of Munds Park, turn off (to the west [to the right]) onto Schnebly Hill Rd, and follow Schnebley Hill Rd/Forest Service road 153a. You'll need a local detailed map; you can actually see it clearly on Mapquest. You have to drive slowly. When you get out of the car to gasp at the views, watch for Gila Monsters, although there aren't too many in May, but watch the ground. Schnebley will take you down to "downtown" Sedona.

Grand Canyon, the San Franciscos, going down to the Sedona cliffs with scenery straight out of movies directed by John Huston. Wow...... what an adventure!! Then a gourmet lunch/dinner in Sedona! Yes!!!
If they really want a ghost town, and who wouldn't?!, Jerome, for sure!

Have a wonderful time!

It all depends on what kinds of things you want to do. In the Phoenix area, if you're looking for more "urban" activity, there is a very active nightlife in certain areas ... especially the Mill Avenue district in downtown Tempe, and downtown Scottsdale. Those areas attract a very young, hip crowd, and there are plenty of clubs, bars, and eateries to choose from. There are also a few spots in downtown Phoenix and along the Camelback corridor (24th Street/Camelback area) that you might try.

If you're looking for more outdoor activites, there are certainly plenty of those to choose from as well. You don't have to leave the state and go to Rocky Point because Arizona has a lot to see & do. Of course, the Grand Canyon & Sedona are tourist havens ... but if you want to avoid the crowds, I suggest visiting parts of SE Arizona, especially Chiracahua Monument, which has some spectacular rock formations. Karchner Caverns and Tombstone are other places in SE Arizona you might want to try as well.

I would recommend driving on Highway 89/89A from Wickenburg, through Prescott, Jerome, Cottonwood, Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff. It is a very scenic drive. Then from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon, it's about 75 miles west/northwest of Flagstaff. If you can, spend the night in Flagstaff, and make the Grand Canyon visit an all day trip.
