Checking into Arizona for retirement and am seeing higher than CA utility rates and no solar on roofs? Seems odd. What am I missing.

Are you certain about that? Be specific. And name what area you're looking at. There's more than one utility.

The apartment complex I live at has solar. Utilities are very reasonable.

I looked into going solar, but the return on the initial investment was 5 years. So I pay $15,000 up front (wasn't interested in leasing)and after about 5 years I would see a return. My neighbors went solar and they like it. Doesn't always work in their benefit though and they lease it. They've already had to have the company come out and replace all the panels because they were either rusting or had some other issue, I forget. They say that their utility bill is super low, but they still have to pay for the lease. So they don't really save a lot. They're always vague when I ask exactly how much they pay in total for electricity, so I figure if it was a lot, they would just say the amount.

I'm thinking that eventually there will be better solar available and more affordable. The technology is changing so fast.

Also, out of 20 homes in our subdivision, they are the only ones with solar.

I wonder how resale of a house with solar will work out. I would not purchase a house with solar personally. A seller will want to recoup their “investment “ from a buyer. Not me.

I thought that I would be interested in getting solar when I got here in Arizona. However, even if my electric bills went away completely, it would take 20 years to pay back the initial investment.

Solar was a pretty good investment in AZ at one time but not now

You wouldn't be interested in saving $2500/yr?

That would be silly. Mine are now 10 years old, and have paid for themselves. 20 years is just too long. They must have eliminated some subsidies?
