I may be moving to Whiteriver, Arizona to work for the Indian Health Service. There is RV space available at the hospital and I need to be frugal.
If I get a used 5th Wheel or travel trailer with the winterization package, will I stay warm in the winter? Thank you for any information you can share.

Depends on your tolerance for cold. It stays warmer down in Whiteriver than it does up on the mountain (Pinetop - Show Low) though.

Retired fulltime rv'er here....I understand your motivation, my wife was a Travel Nurse, and we used our 5th wheel as our home for 8 years, but we followed the sun, didn't have to worry about cold weather. She had a contract in Show Low, among other places in AZ. Some RV's are better equipped to handle cold, but RV's, regardless of type or manufacturer are not designed for real cold weather, I would advise against it, especially as you would be a greenhorn attempting to struggle with heat/running out of propane just when you need it most, keeping your water hose from freezing, and the cold/snowy weather. Whiteriver can't be that much different than Show Low, and they get a lot of snow. VentureIn is an RV park in Show Low, they have park models for rent, and may be able to accommodate you. A Park Model is a smaller size mobile home. They had been staying open in the winter last I heard. A commute from Show Low to Whiteriver wouldn't be that bad, unless the roads were snow covered. As you will be working on the Res, you might inquire about staying at the Hondo hotel/casino...maybe they will cut you a deal, as that is Indian owned. The Hotel/casino would entail another commute, from a different direction.

Good Luck

With all due respect to gemstone1, I have to say these things.

Whiteriver is more than one thousand feet lower in elevation than Show Low and even more than that compared to Pinetop. We do not always get a lot of snow up here on the mountain during the winter, but even still, what we get further up will certainly be less and more so, melt off much quicker down in Whiteriver.

Yes, a commute from Show Low to Whiteriver could be bad if the roads are snowy/icy, but if you stayed up at Hon-Dah (not Hondo), the commute would be in the very same direction, just much shorter. Unless you wanted to take the very long way around the barn would you not go through Pinetop -> Hon-Dah from Show Low to Whiteriver.

Show Low -> Pinetop. About fifteen miles. Pinetop -> Hon-Dah, about three miles. See the map for yourself:

Thanks for clearing that up for the OP Teddy, it was 2006 when we were there, guess my memory is worse that I thought.

This is great advice. Whiteriver is not as cold as Flagstaff (on average) but definitely can get frigid at times. It snows there, and it has a much higher altitude than Phoenix. People from Tucson and Phoenix often go up to that region to escape the summer heat - Show Low, Pinetop, Reservation Lake, Hawley Lake, etc. Whiteriver is at a higher altitude in the mountains. That is elk country with rainbow trout in the surrounding streams and lakes: Willow Creek, Diamond Creek, East Fork, Shash Beh Tooh, etc.

Usually, the IHS had some means of accommodating allied health workers at many of the rural clinics. But Pinetop is also very close. Most people from Whiteriver shop in Pinetop or Show Low. The Hotel casino is called "Honda" or "Ha' an nah" which is loosely translated as a cultural form of hospitality: "Greetings - come in".

There definitely is a shortage of certified allied health professionals in rural clinics. In general, there is a shortage of primary care providers. Best wishes from a Native American of rural Arizona. There is demand for allied health.

Default RV park near hospital?

So I know this thread is stale, but since I'm having issues finding anything anywhere else, I am going to see if anyone here can help.

My wife is a travel nurse and we live full time in an RV. We are looking at taking a position at Whiteriver IHS and noticed the RV park near the hospital on Google maps and in the hospital photos.

Does anyone know if the RV park is still there and usable? If so, what are the requirements to utilize it? Meaning as a travel nurse would my wife be able to stay there? Finally, any idea what they charged to stay there?

Sorry for the question bombardment, but I can't find anything anywhere else about the RV sites and we'd like to know before we apply on a contract there!

Thanks in advance,

Mic
