Hello,

I will be moving to Phoenix AZ for a full time job. I have already secured a place to live. However, I never learned how to drive in my home state (TX) so I am wondering if I should consider getting my license in Texas and then have it changed in AZ or wait until I am in AZ to do it. I only hold a Texas ID as of now. I have some confidence but would like more practice.

My plan as of now, if I were to do this in AZ, is take the permit class and granted there is no need to wait 6 months for the permit to be valid as someone over the age of 21, I can take the drivers test as soon as possible when I feel comfortable enough. If not, then I will attempt to get it in TX before I move to AZ and then just go through the paperwork again to have it changed. I move in mid July.

My concern is that I have not found anything written that states anyone over the age of 18 in AZ needs to hold a permit for 6 months, the same as if they were a teenager (15-17)who is just beginning to drive. Similar to Texas, there is a 6 hour course permit class that is to be taken and have up to 90 days to take the driving test.

Do I have to wait 6 months for my AZ permit expires to obtain my AZ drivers license or can I change it when I have scheduled and passed the driving test as soon as possible after obtaining a permit?

As far as I have found, an AZ driver's permit for anyone over the age of 18 is not required in order to advance to a DL. This is the thread I have found with some information.
