In 60 years have never seen a rattlesnake in the urban areas, they're generally active in the rural areas and on the fringe areas of new residential developments.

I live in a well established subdivision that's been around for over 30 years. Get one or two rattlesnakes a year in my yard and bump into another half a dozen while walking the dogs yearly.

When I lived in Phoenix I saw them often in the middle of town at various parks. They are everywhere if you know where to look.

But the telling thing is that I asked a longtime search and rescue volunteer if he has every had to rescue a snake bite victim from a hiking or other multi-use trail. In almost 50 years and over 1000 rescues, not a single one was the result of a snake bite. They are pretty much not a threat.

Can you spot the rattlesnake in this photo? Many missed it hiding in an Arizona yard?

I've done miles and miles of hiking, trail running and bushwhacking all over the state. My only close call with a rattlesnake was 10 feet from my front door. It was curled up under a bush and I hit it with lopers when trimming the bush. To say it wasn't happy about getting clipped would be an understatement.

Sort of a lousy pic to ask people to see it.

But that terrain is EXACTLY where I would expect to see a rattler.

And BTW, I would not exactly call that a "backyard".

I've only seen three rattlesnakes in Arizona over the years. Two while hiking in South Mountain park, on different occasions, and one on Camelback Mountain.
