There hasn't been a new nuclear plant built in the US in 35 years. There can't be until the politicians decide what to do with the waste, something they haven't done in the first 50 years of nuclear power. Well, they thought they did, but the democrats vetoted Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

The NRC can't even issue a construction permit until this and many other legal issues are resolved. The legal challenges will tie any such project up in the courts for at least a decade, then it will take another 10 years to built the plant, at a cost of probably at least 3 billion dollars.

Don't hold your breath on this one.

I saw in the local fishwrap the other day the Mohave county is trying to get it brought into the county somewhere.

I live in Mohave County and I saw that too. For the reasons mentioned above, it can't happen for decades. It was just some Republican politician making statements his constituency would like to hear, with no basis in reality. Sort of like Bush saying we're going to put a man on Mars.

My husband is in the nuke industry and I swore he said there are currently ones getting built. Perhaps they are in the process of getting permits and getting through all the red tape. I will have to double check with him. You can thank Harry Reed for Yucca Mountain. All the nuke plants put money into getting it built and he goes to block it form happening.

You are correct. There are a couple of new construction permit applications on file with the NRC, for Texas and Maryland. Without a permanent waste repository, they cannot be built.
The anti-nuclear folks have not yet begun to fight these.

Nukes may make a comeback. I read recently that the environmental movement is coming to see nuclear as a lesser and more manageable evil than carbon-dioxide induced climate change. What took them so long?

Politicians are holding up the progress. Here's a recent news article about it.

Could it have to do with John McCain trying to lease out land adjacent to the Grand Canyon for Uranium Strip Mining? I don't think it's a power plant it's Unranium Production, which is much dirtier

I suspect it will be awhile before we see any new nuclear plants built.
