Yes, it does make a difference. Financial aid is directed to those who need it. There is an expectation that parents will contribute to the costs of an education. If parents claim a student on their taxes, then the parents financial ability to contribute is considered.

From the University's own FAQ:

If a student is under 23 years of age and unmarried, that student cannot be considered a resident of Arkansas for fee paying purposes unless one of the parents is a legal resident of the state.

Exceptions are made only if the student can provide evidence that he or she is earning an income large enough to support him or her without financial assistance from parents or guardians. Proof of financial independence requires copies of the parent's federal tax return for the previous year. If a student is claimed as a dependent on the parent's federal tax return, he or she cannot be considered a financially independent adult for reclassification purposes.

Thanks for that clarification. That's not how it was explained to me by North Arkansas college, although we did already live here. That was never asked. They just told me they would go by the students license or rent/lease forms.

Sure seems ridiculous to me that an adult of 21/22 years of age still has to show parents info.

It's because financial aid is a limited resource, and people do try to play the system.
