We are taking a 4-day cycle trip staying in Ft. Smith koa in May. Looking at the map, I notice many roads coming off of Hwy 71 between Ft. Smith and Fayetteville are paved and then turn into graved. Wondering if there is any access from say Winslow to Elkins without going to Fayetteville. Looking for less traveled but paved roads in the mountain areas. Plan to check out Mt. Magazine area also. Thanks

Anyone??? Hate to get too far into the sticks and find myself making pig sounds. I can't believe you can't get from say Artist's Point to Elkins without taking interstate or going through Fayetteville. I hate interstates and traffic. Also, does anyone have any good BBQ recommendations in the Ft. Smith area. Thanks!!

The only highway I know of that connects Hwy 71 over to the Highway 16 area (Elkins, Huntsville, etc.) is Arkansas Hwy 74, which leaves 71 just south of Brentwood as Whitehouse Road and passes through Sulphur City just before connecting to Hwy 16 south of Elkins. I've only been on the stretch from Hwy 16 to Sulphur City, so I can't say from personal knowledge that it's paved all the way, but as a two-digit state highway I'd be very surprised if it weren't. What condition it's in is another question, of course.

The traffic at hwy 71 and 16 thru south Fayetteville isn't usually very heavy. You really are not getting far enough into the city to deal with a lot of traffic.

Jerry Neals on Phoenix avenue is supposed to be the best BBQ in Fort Smith.
I can't remember exactly where Elkins is but 71 from Alma to Fayettville would probably be a nice ride. In my experience traffic in south Fayettville is usually not that bad.

My brother likes the BBQ place in Ozark, which could easily be swung through on the way to Magazine from Ft. Smith. It's somewhere on the square downtown by the courthouse. Can't remember the name of it.

Default Bike rides

The name of the BBQ in Ozark is the Rivertown BBQ. Highly recommend it
It 's located downtown just west and one block south of the courthouse. Route 23 north out of Ozark is a nice bike ride. Lots of riders go up and over the mountain.

While your in Fort Smith you should also try a bowl of pho (Vietnamese noodle soup) too. Pho Vietnam on Rogers is probably the best one.
