We are new to AR and have seen a few TV ads that say to assess before May 31. What does that mean? We have not recieved anything in the mail. We were at the assessors office last week to register our new car and was floored when they charged us $1700!!! Nobody said anything about assessing. What do we do? Does it matter that we just moved here?

An assessor comes out and values your home so they can tax you for it. If you bought an existing home, they may already have the tax base and that's what you paid.

I seriously don't think you paid $1700 for a vehicle.

I have a $50k SUV and I only paid a couple hundred for that.

CAn't help you with the assess thing but yes, I bet you were shocked. Did you buy the car in AR and did you buy from a private party or a dealer? I ask, because part of the cost could be the taxes. We were shocked as well when we registered our car we purchased here last summer. Usually we would buy from a dealer and never paid much attention to the sales taxes, we just rolled it all together. The good news, you won't be hit much next year so we have been told.

Yes, that is what we were charged. The $1700 was for taxes and registration. They said it would be only $27 next year. The car cost about 23K. We just moved here and are renting so do we have to worry about assessing?

Probably not if you are renting.

You can always call the office and ask. When I stumble in with questions, they're always super cool about explaining everything in detail.

Can't believe that $1700 charge.

Bet that didn't help your opinion of AR any.

We just moved here also. I hate the thought that I just bought my car in Ohio this past December, now I have to pay tax on it here also!?? That just does not make sense to me

If you already paid taxes on it, you won't.

I personally think it's WRONG to charge taxes on used cars in Arkansas, but they do.

And if you're renting, the only thing you have to assess is your automobile(s).

The $1700 had to be the sales tax. You won't pay the property tax on it until next year and it should only be around $175 depending on your county.

The thing that drives me crazy is that every year you have to re-assess. I always forget until it comes time to renew my tags. I don't understand why the state can't figure out that if I owned the car last year I'll still own it this year.

When renting the only things you'll have to assess are your cars. Boats, trailers, campers, etc. get assessed as well.
